To Pull - update this Rachel

Ceiling Fan Cords
My idea for To Pull is to make two mini ceiling fans that you pull to turn on the ceiling fan. I would make tiny ceiling fans that are on the strings of a normal ceiling fan. The reason I chose this idea was because I couldn't think of anything else to do and I thought it would be cute and a little funny. Since I don't own a dresser with drawer pulls or want a door knocker that I would never put on my door, I kept going back to the pulls for a light and thought this was a good idea. And I can take them with me wherever I live that has a ceiling fan.

TO HANG

The first artist I found was Frank Plant. He incorporates steel lines and sheets in his work which often depicts figures. While his images are flat, the cutouts and use of lines give the sculptures more depth.

Another artist I chose for inspiration is Vaughn Randall. He uses cutouts, often with radial symmetry throughout many of his sculptures. He also has a series of boats with wheels and other machines that implement the symmetry of his other sculptures.

For my To Hang project, I want to make a coat rack with four hooks on the bottom for coats and jackets and four hooks higher for hats or keys. The hooks I could cast out of iron and possibly add embellishments. My first idea is to incorporate  Frank Plant's use of steel sheets and pencil rods. In an abstract mountain landscape. I would like to layer the sheets with the mountains that are farther away to create a sense of depth and differentiate the layers of each mountain. Some of the mountains will be open creating negative space, some will be solid sheets of steel, and for others I would do something to add texture. The piece would be 3-4 feet long and 1 1/2 feet tall and hang on a wall. This idea might be a little cliche and done already, but it is something that I would put in the entryway of my house.

My other, more simple idea is to only make cast iron hooks. I would make four single hooks that are tree inspired. One is a pine tree, aspen, a small branch with leaves, and a pinecone. I am not set on those four things specifically but something along those lines. I don't like this idea as much as my first one but I think it would take much less time and I would still use these hooks.

TO LIGHT

My artist inspiration is Kendall Buster. Buster's sculptures use light material around wire which makes the sculpture feel light. They are abstract but many of the pieces represent landscapes. They are often lit up and the layers create a different amount of highlights and shadows throughout the piece.

Here are more images that I found on Pinterest with similar ideas. Sculptural relief flowers which I will use in the center of the sun. And other lamps that cast shadows.

My to Light idea is a sun lamp. It will be made of layered steel panels and cut-outs on the side, or maybe tinted Plexi glass and steel panels. From the front view, it will look like a half-sun with radial sun rays layered back and forth. The center of the sun will have a cast iron relief depicting flowers, I am not sure how I should go about making the flowers, can I cast real flowers? Or should I sculpt them from clay? From the side and top view, it will have alternating panels and cut-outs so that the light can shine through and create sun rays on the wall and ceiling, the shadows are the most important thing that I want from this sculpture. The light bulb will be in the center. It will sit on a table or nightstand and the dimensions will be 8x4x2 inches.

  1. Okay so let's take this in a different direction. A fan cools us. Its a modern convention that thank goodness we have access to. What could make sense for an image to be the pull. It could be a representation of wind. It could be a play on the idea of modern man made wind. It could be an image of beauty or intrigue. A small fan as a pull may not physically work so think about other options. https://www.google.com/search?q=fan+pulls&sxsrf=ALiCzsYEGg6DqrZfVuwQVEbE85B8Aq-wEA:1662436089833&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjnpuKEof_5AhUVLzQIHdqdDbIQ_AUoAnoECAEQBA&biw=1536&bih=847&dpr=2

  2. Wind mills come to mind when I think of the West and the wind to provide us with electricity. In class you mentioned skiing. What if you thought about making the skies into a wind device that you pulled a string to get it to spin.
