HW130 Farm Equipment--
Inspiration
This first image of the large trailer is what originally inspired me toward the idea of a wagon piece.

Revisiting some ideas now.
Four new sculptures this fall.

1. Wagon

I am interested in putting something on wheels. Coming back from the mountains recently I noticed all the same old pieces of farm equipment that have been always been there. They have so much character after such aggressive lives and weathering days. There is a rudimentary, or maybe just fundamental/basic, relationship between the metals and the woods which are most commonly used to construct this older equipment. The woods weather much more visibly than the metals and warp themselves into entirely new structures than those originally intended. They take on a new personality alike. But cannot remove themselves necessarily from their partner, the metal, which still often holds these twisted structures in totally natural and most dependable ways. The metal may not alter its structure, but it develops age wrinkles eventually and seems to become more dependable over time, even when no longer used anymore. There is one large wagon, in particular, out HW130 which I think looks like Wyoming wind (Photo Soon).

This equipment is often quite large, but I'd like to take the personality I see in these structures and build a smaller wagon.
It would be ideal if I could utilize real wagon wheels (found or fabricated). I really enjoy the aspect of extraordinarily large wheels with small carriages. A satirical note, similar to Giacometti's Chariot.
I like the idea of a wagon that is kind of unpractical in its use, but still functional to all the characteristics of a wagon. (To hold or carry (subject), To be pulled, To roll on (wheels)).

I am thinking about utilizing the crate listed below in the Found Object section. For which I would need to fabricate a steel framework, axels, and handle, (Maybe Wheels).
I may have a link to a few ready-made wagon wheels. I will pursue this further this week.

A brief layout sketch of the steel framework can be seen in the upper right corner of the second sketch page below. -Angle iron, rectangular bar, rod. I am thinking the crate would fit snug inside the framework with no other permanent points of connection.

Arts & Crafts

  • What were some of the distinguishing factors of Arts and Crafts?
Rebuff of all things Victorian. Arts and Crafts hailed the medieval era, clean-cut, ideal Italian composition, and design WHILE ALSO condemning historicism.
Believed moderation in ornamentation was a moral lost.
Skeptical of an industrial society and the lack of connection with Nature.
Creative consciousness was always a duality of a sort. To compromise for their position in history and what they thought their purpose was.

  • What was modern about Arts and Crafts?
The Arts and Crafts movement consisted of a group of individuals who were simultaneously intellectuals and populists. People who connected with a rural aspect of Nature but also recognized their place within the design of their urban nature. A duel personality within their creative momentum was very much "turn of the century", no?

  • What's the role of women in Arts & Crafts?
Maybe women were just for Rosetti's apparently brilliant turnaround towards the objectification of them in 'right' proportions.
But May Morris was able to design a few wonderful panels. Only because she grew up inside the family of The major design company at the time.
Most of the time the women probably taught their husbands what they needed to do to upholster a seat and then the men are credited in the textbooks for working at factory production levels.

  • Thoughts/opinions about Arts & Crafts?
I guess I'm just curious why the Pre-Rafaelites chose to turn back to before the late renaissance for idealism. And to better understand their perspective towards both the high and the late renaissance work. Just seems like a tight spot to split it up at...? so

Sketches of Station:

What has really become a pressing issue over the years, the last two or so especially has been the storage of the work I have come to make. As it took a while to really define what visual language I wanted to consistently work with, it also took a while for the work to find its own voice. It shifted around inconsistently and unconvincingly for a good while. Now I have a much better understanding of where my work would like to stretch to, and what sort of work I would like to be pursuing throughout my twenties.

I fully expect myself to make these crazy sorts of things by my work. I do not expect to profit very much off of them, as most of them are just absurd objects to the non-collecter.

I also expect myself to live a pretty god damn nomadic lifestyle for a good while. And it would be nice to know that my work has somewhere safe to exist when I am not around. I believe that if I can construct a good enough plan, and show some family ahead of time, I would be able to commit to a dry, clean, safe environment for the Station to live in indefinitely.

So that is the plan, being I aim to design the Station for canvas storage, keeping in mind large-scale works that I have already created over the last few years or stretchers and canvas I have stashed which I have been shuffling around haphazardly for too long.

To Pull

-wagon handle (front side)

-clip (like broom dustpans)

*Is bronze appropriate for this?

To Pull-
Simple handle for near shuffling of the back end of the Station.
-two handles, one on each side
-three finger pull, (4"x1") *fatty finger recognition
-floral wrap, noworp, worpwrap.
-no jagged edges

*Revise attachment to the Station w Carlisle

-include holes like chair?

No good.

  • Wagon
  • Crate, Box, Chest

*Could very much utilize a new hanging system for my tapestry charcoal drawings.
-Set up, take down, presentation, strong, dependent, storage.

Carts and Wagons:

Can't tell ya what it is but I think I JUST HAVE GOT TO PUT SOMETHING ON WHEELS THIS FALL.

Eyes peeled for one of the classic big REDS pleaseee! Would love to work with one.

How to:
-I reckon I might do just this.
Brace direct to a plywood board, position for the functionality of wheels (4) too; naturally braced again.
Strong enough to flex, hold, and be mobile. Sit over time.

Blue Wren (Legs)
Thinking about furniture legs. Mad love for the die Blau. Beautiful 3-4" blue lightning with quirk chirp.

ANCIENT DESIGN - EGYPTIAN

1. What would you have been buried with regarding favorite possessions or homewares?

-Catcher in the Rye, bundle of Sage or two, my cowboy hat, one package of Tim Tams, photos of friends/family, empty daybook/sketchbook and a Palomino Blackwing 602 matte pencil.

2. What type of design aesthetic are you more drawn to, highly decorated or more simplistic with clean lines and bare planar features so the material stands out more?

I am certainly attracted to more simplistic design. Even Minimalist design when thinking about interior furniture. Were I to dream-build my own home or the like, I am not sure I would be interested in keeping it all in bounds of cubes. Neither am I one much for an overstimulated visual sense, as I find myself always paying so much visual attention already I exhaust myself. I love a white-walled home, with a clean bare floor, natural window light or minimally soft lighting, and the bare essential furniture. (Mattress and bedstand, dresser, bookshelf, small table). Small decoration atop, but I am not a knick-knack guy, too many of those in my damn family already.

Death is really just the other side of life. The side turned away from us. Like a coin.

*What kind of materials can I draw/paint on after molding/casting/hand-forming?
